Terra Incognito (2022)
Terra Incognito depicts a speculative scenario about a digital child inhabiting its own place in the metaverse and how they relate to the physical world.
This virtual habitat of the Non-Fungible Child (NFC) is the setting for a fictional scenario where a fully digital, AI-powered offspring is born in a future where environmental collapse has led many to forgo biological reproduction. These children, reminiscent of hyper-evolved Tamagotchis™, live entirely in the metaverse, occupying their parents’ virtual properties and attending virtual schools alongside human peers. Designed with artificial intelligence at their core, NFCs not only learn and play — they outperform in play-to-earn economies, growing their families’ digital assets as part of their daily routines. The work reflects on childhood through the lens of technological trends.
This scenario is part of a broader project called Gen C: Children of 2050, a solo exhibition by Bianca Carague, where she imagines various kids of the future and takes visitors through their bedrooms.
