Maria Islands (2023)
Maria Islands began as a speculative scenario: a future where Philippine islands adapt to a world shaped by plastic waste exported to the country by Western nations. I imagined new ecosystems, architectures, and life forms—half-natural, half-synthetic — through worldbuilding and narrative design.
These ideas evolved into physical forms through a process of 3D modeling and printing, resulting in a series of sculptural artifacts that feel both futuristic and strangely familiar. It’s a project about imagined futures made tangible—about how stories can take shape as objects.
Through 3D-printed sculptures, video, and scent, the story of ‘Maria Islands’ came to life as a series of artifacts from another timeline. This allowed the story to reach people through various senses, bringing the fictional scenario to life beyond the screen.
