The narratives behind healthcare, technology and the economy cultivate relationships wherein we commodify each other’s wellbeing as a means to capitalist ends rather than an end in itself. This is causing stress, anxiety, depression and mass burnout; during times of crisis like a pandemic, the faulty ways in which these systems serve us are further exacerbated.
When we start to look at these systems from the lens of game mechanics, we can start to question the fundamental rules that govern our lives and realize that they can be modified. As they are today, most video games have capitalist ideologies encoded into their very mechanics, and we often forget that they can be used as a tool through which we can experiment in ways not possible in our existing environment. Virtual worlds offer a unique set of possibilities, that, when activated thoughtfully, could begin to include more diversity in perspective that prioritizes our wellbeing.
So what does it mean to bump into each other actually? To gently collide, in surprising and meaningful ways pregnant with possibility. Let’s build a world where caring for each other means playing together, because we are living in a game world -- one in which we can modify the code if we like!
